1251
Who does the best Sunday roast? Well, I can say one thing for sure—it’s definitely not my mum. However, having been lucky enough to sample this classic British tradition at many restaurants, my current top pick has to be James Cochran’s 1251 in Islington.
When evaluating the perfect roast, we have to start with the main event: the meat. Seldom have I had roast beef this mouthwateringly succulent. That said, it’s worth noting that there isn’t a choice of meats—so if beef isn’t your thing, 1251 might not be the one for you.
Of course, while the star of the show is crucial, the sides make or break the experience—and 1251 delivers in every way. Expect airy, crisp Yorkshire puddings, rich, velvety gravy, and meltingly tender brisket, just to name a few standout players in this theatrical feast. For me, this is an elevation of the typical Sunday roast—one that is absolutely deserving of the title “Best Sunday Roast.”
That said, this is definitely more of a treat than your typical Toby Carvery outing—it’ll set you back a few pennies. Also, be sure to book in advance; the dining space is cozy and doesn’t seat many, so tables fill up fast, especially around midday on Sunday.
